Wilson Sons unveils its first Scope 3 emissions inventory, earning a fifth Gold Seal, and advances low‑carbon port logistics with fleet upgrades, renewable energy, and innovative operations.

Brazilian port and maritime logistics leader Wilson Sons has released its first Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory, extending its environmental accounting to the full value chain. The milestone coincides with the company’s fifth straight Gold Seal award from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, recognising transparency and best practice in climate reporting.

The new Scope 3 disclosure — based on 2024 data — covers emissions from suppliers, clients, distribution activities, and leased assets, aligning with global decarbonisation frameworks such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the International Maritime Organization’s Net Zero by 2050 ambitions. Initial findings confirm that Scope 3 accounts for the largest share of Wilson Sons’ total carbon footprint.

“This goes beyond meeting a technical requirement — it signals our commitment to transforming the entire logistics value chain sustainably,” said João David Santos, Sustainability Manager at Wilson Sons.

Priority Emission Categories

The inaugural Scope 3 inventory prioritised high‑impact areas:

  • Purchased goods and services for daily operations
  • Capital goods acquisitions
  • Upstream energy and fuel activities
  • Use of sold services, particularly diesel consumed by client‑owned vessels in port and towage operations
  • Leased offshore support vessels

Decarbonisation Initiatives

Wilson Sons has invested in fuel‑efficient technologies, vessel fleet renewal, and operational innovations. Between 2022 and 2024, the company built six tugboats with an advanced hull design that cuts fossil fuel consumption by an estimated 14%. In 2025, construction began on three next‑generation high‑powered tugboats at its Guarujá shipyard.

Further measures include:

  • Shore power connections for tugboats using renewable energy
  • Biofuel adoption
  • Fleet tracking to optimise voyage speeds
  • Full renewable electricity sourcing at Rio Grande Container Terminal
  • Diesel‑to‑electric equipment replacement at both Salvador and Rio Grande terminals
  • Drone trials for onboard cargo delivery at the Port of Salvador

Industry Leadership

In a national context where Scope 3 disclosure is still emerging, Wilson Sons’ voluntary reporting sets a benchmark for Brazil’s port and logistics sector. The company says its approach strengthens Brazilian foreign trade competitiveness while supporting global maritime decarbonisation goals.
